Unlike AJC, Korea schools going all out to ensure exam candidates have a safe environment..

From Straits Times, 13 Nov.

SEOUL - RUSH hour was rescheduled, aircraft landings were delayed and even the stock market opened late as more than half a million South Korean children sat a crucial examination on Thursday.

Parents could be seen praying outside schools where their kids were taking the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), a decisive factor in determining future careers.

At Incheon city near Seoul younger students and graduates lined up outside a high school, cheering on test applicants and handing them cups of coffee and tea before their ordeal.

Military training exercises nationwide were suspended and military aircraft grounded to avoid noise during audio foreign language tests, a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff told wires agencies.

Seven inbound flights to the country’s main airport Incheon were told to stay at an altitude of 10,000 feet as students took the first audio test that lasted 13 minutes.

‘We have been forewarning all airlines about the restriction over the past month so that they may adjust flight schedules to avoid landing during the hearing test sessions,’ an air traffic controller said.

The stock market, government agencies and many private firms opened one hour later to ease morning traffic jams that could cause students to be late.

‘Dealers and investors take it for granted since CSAT is considered so important in this country,’ said Mr Hong Joon Yon, spokesman for the Korea Securities Dealers Association.

At the presidential Blue House First Lady Kim Yoon Ok reportedly sent rice cakes to the children of Blue House employees who were due to take the exam.

Rice cakes, whose stickiness symbolises sticking to success, are a favourite lucky gift for CSAT day together with candies.

Education authorities said about 590,000 students sat the day-long exam at nearly 1,000 centres. To prevent cheating, they were banned from carrying electronic gadgets such as mobile phones or MP3 players.

Some 14,000 police officers as well as 6,800 taxi drivers and more than 4,200 police vehicles were on stand-by to help students arrive in time, Yonhap news agency said.

Subways and buses ran more frequently in the morning.

In the southeastern city of Ulsan, 11 emergency vehicles and 22 rescuers were deployed at key intersections to help students who overslept to arrive at test sites on time.

Critics say the CSAT exam tests rote learning and sometimes involves expensive private tutoring.

It plays a decisive role in deciding which colleges and universities students enter, and thus their future careers. In Korea, great emphasis is placed on attendance at a prestigious university.

An estimated 200 stressed students commit suicide in South Korea every year, according to police statistics.

‘CSAT tends to favour students whose brains are crammed through rote learning and it fails to select students with potential and creativity,’ Mr Song In Soo, an educational activist, told the wires.

‘We must shift to a more advanced system through which students are tested, observed and developed over a long time instead of a one-off, multiple-answer test like CSAT.’ — AFP

Private A-Level Candidates at Anderson Junior College attacked by poisonous insects!!

Having been a student at Anderson Junior College, it is my opinion that the school administrations are more concerned about the results than providing a safe and conducive educational environment.

Here are some of my favourites, with photos, taken during my short stay there.

This water cooler was located outside the school hall, and was in this state throughout the entire period when the JC1s were having orientation in the hall. According to the OM, they cleaned out the water storage tank and algae accumlated there. Since orientation activities induce thirst and this water cooler was nearest to the hall where orientation was held, I suspected that more than 50% of the JC1s drank this before I noticed it and report it to AJC authority.

Immediately after I reported this incident, all filter covers on water coolers in AJC were immediately replaced with opaque ones so as to “prevent exposure to sunlight and prevent algae growth.”

This happened suddenly, and for the entire day it was hanging there. There was no sign to warn people to stay away from it, and AJC students, being slightly academically inclined and having nothing else in the brains, happily use the table under it to study without any fear.

This is the CORE escape route for most of the entire school’s population in the Fire Escape plan. The school had promised to fix this when I was there as a JC1 student. It was still there when I graduated.

Now a bunch of private candidates who were unluckily assigned to take the exams in Anderson Junior College were attacked by the main residents in the campus - a huge presence of poisonous insects. At least one of the candidates had to seek treatment at clinics.

When questioned, the Vice-Principal of AJC, said something along this line, “We spray insecticides once every 2 weeks. So I donno why this is happening!”

Here is an excerpt from a complain letter written to Today.

Bugs attackat exam centre

Private A-levels candidate had arms swollen with insect bites after a weekin junior college test centre

Letter from Peter Pius

I AM writing this letter as a concerned parent and as a very concerned citizen.
My daughter is sitting for her A-level examinations this year as a private candidate. She was assigned an exam centre at Anderson Junior College in Ang Mo Kio, and given a seat in a classroom on the ground floor of the building.
The exams started last Monday. Within the first two days, private candidates sitting for the examination were complaining of insect bites. They took insect repellent into the classroom with them. On Thursday, someone from the school came and sprayed some insecticide.
However, by the weekend, my daughter’s arms were so swollen with insect bites (picture) we had to rush her to the 24-hour clinic to seek treatment. I was close to tears upon seeing the condition of my daughter’s arms.
I want to ask the Ministry of Education what the basic requirements in the selection of exam centres are. Does the ministry send representatives to inspect exam centres?

I am sure students are facing enough pressure coping with their exams. The least we could do is provide them a decent environment in which to give their best. We are a first-class nation. This should never have happened in Singapore. I hope the Ministry of Education will look into this and take proactive steps to address the issue.

And people, still remember the sexuality talk saga where AJC hired a bunch of religious guys who make students write down things like “I shall not masturbabe.” “IVF is bad.”? It first came under media attention due to yours truly’s blog.

Carpe Diam…

Carpe Diam… Seize the day…

In Chinese High one of my Social Studies teacher, Ms Esther Cheong told us about the concept of Carpe Diam.. sieze the day. We should live today as if today is the last, so that there will be no regret.

I was totally taken in by this and even went to extent of counting the total number of hours there are in my life, assuming I can live up to the age of 70. I looked back and was astonished by how much I have wasted my life away in the past few years. From then on I decided to be productive as much as possible.

When I go into Army I had difficulties adapting. Following orders blindly and doing the things that Army do isn’t really my cup of tea. And all these things don’t exact fit my idea of Carpe Diam. My life is mine and I get to dictate it. I want to spend it productively and not by running in circles and marching around. I want the 2 years to be over fast, but that itself would contradict in another manner of Carpe Diam… 2 years speeding pass quickly means 2 years wasted quickly.

When I got downgraded due to coping problems I was revocated as a clerk. Then I start to see what other people would do whenever they are free - sleep. During offs, they sleep at home. During lunch breaks, they sleep. During office hour, they sleep. When there is nothing to do, they sleep.

I simply cannot comprehend this. To quote author Douglas Adams, “Time is wasted in sleeping”. If you sleep 12 hours a day, you are only awake for 35 years before you die at the age of 70. If you sleep for 6 hours per day, you are awake for 52.5 years, a significant increase. I started to despise sleep. Every single second I spend awake must be spent doing something.

Travelling to me is another perfect waste of time. To counter that I spent huge cash on portable audio gadgets, giving me superb enjoyment on those boring journeys. Psp and iPod Touch are in as well for watching videos and playing games.

Running my own websites, blogging, designing The Wicked, building Gundam kits, playing with remote control cars. Not a single moment is spent without doing anything. If I am not working, I am enjoying.

Fatigue from the lack of sleep sets in. Signs of insufficient rest. I have been living the past 6 years of my life without too much of a rest except for my daily 6 to 8 hours of sleep. I am now tired.

I will be abandoning Carpe Diam, something that had guided me for the past 6 years. Living everyday as if it is the last is simply too tiring, and it gives me no future to look forward to.

I am going to live everyday as if it is not the last. Things must be done correctly and foundation must be set. There is a future to look forward to and that gives me hope. To live like that everyday is to live like a dying man with cancer. There is no future for him. There is a future for me.

Seize the future.

I am fucked up

I am fucked up..

Grave mistakes were made, trust was broken, work (shit would be a better word) is piling up and I can feel my brain freezing up.

I used to be unable to make such grave mistakes. Now I make them. And I have broken people’s trust, and my own dignity and reputation. I didn’t even think through what I was about to do, whether I really meant it, its consequences, and whether it is a right or wrong thing to do. My ability to discern right and wrong is eroding.

I do not know if this is because of the grave financial situation I have put myself in… now I suffering the onslaught of my spendings in the past few months. And as a result there are things that I had to give up. Things I dream about every night. Things that bring me joy. Things that provide me a healthy outlet to relieve my stress and give me time to rest my mind and to relax. My mind is in such a mess now.

I love radio controlled toys ever since I am young. I would always ask my parents to get one for me, and due to their love but weak financial capabilities, I often get cheap toys that spoils within a few months. It has always been my dream to get a hobby grade remote control car, one that could cost a few hundred dollars. I got my wish first with the purchase of a off-road buggy, and then an on-road touring car. Running the cars on slopes, doing drifts, getting the cars chased by small children. Sitting alone at an open court undisturbed and unconnected to everything. Just squeezing the trigger and enjoy the speed. Those are the happiest days of my life. But having a $440 monthly allowance pay from the Army does not allow me to substain this. Random repairs and monthly tire replacements can take up to as much as 1/4 of my allowance. Another 1/4 goes to transport. Damn the high cost of public transportation. I only have 220 to spend on meals. That is like $50 per week.

My savings soon dripped from 5 digit to 4 and when my radio control set developed problems, I held back my tears and told myself, this is it. I love remote control cars, and I love audio gadgets. But I had to sell them. I have to control my spendings. Off goes my Koss PortaPro headphone of 4 years to some lucky buyer. My girlfriend misses it too because in my JC days, she would always help me fold and keep it neatly in its pouch when I was too lazy to. She loves its sound and even its look. I sold off my $300 brushless motor for $165. I sold off Lipo batteries and charger for my remote control. I sold off the only portable headphone amplifier I currently own. I sold off my interconnect cables. I sold off the MylarOne X3i that I so happily keep in an Impact Candy case and love to surprise friends by pretending to offer them sweet and then opening the box to reveal the earphones.

I watched in misery as all these items I so loved landed onto other people’s hand. Once I sold my stuff to a buyer I would turn around and walk away quickly, fighting the terrible urge to turn back and get my stuff back from them. For many weeks I forgetfully open the drawer where I always kept my Koss Portapro and want to use them, only to remember that I had already sold it. For many nights I dream about playing remote control car. The first few dreams I dreamt that I was playing with my own. In the subsequent dreams, I dreamt that I had to borrow cars from my R/C buddies and play them. Whenever I pass by Saujana court, the place where I always play with on-road car, I would feel sadness overwhelm me and I had to turn away. Once I saw an Uncle playing with an on-road there, I walked over to him and asked if I could join him, only to check myself and remember that the only R/C stuff I have left are a few unused wheels.

All these somehow threw me out of whack. I begin to lose interest in what I do. Nothing feels worth doing in this world anymore. With stupid excuses I delegate all my office work to my understudy. I started to treat my friends badly. When an error-filled submission from an Admin Specialist arrive in my mailbox, I would email back in a very “chee bye” manner and CC the email to my superior and his. When Jaben Forum banned me, I went crazy and posted a silly thing on another forum. When my understudy to ask me things he obviously did not know about while I was on leave, I scolded him. I know it is obviously I am becoming what I know I am not and I could not help it.

My hobbies and obsessions and silly spendings had bled my wallet dry, and when I tried to fix it, I bled my soul dry.

I don’t know what to do anymore. I know that not knowing what to do is a common excuse for doing wrong things, but I really mean it when I have no idea what to do.

Can someone please help? What is right? What is wrong? What is my core personality? What should I believe in? Can I ask for forgiveness? Can I ever get out of this rotten feeling and state of mind?

TV

It is that time of the day,
you sit down on the sofa.
Turn on the television.
Turn on the programming.

TV recommends you everything.
And that everything is sponsored.
Use Brand A for better hair,
Use Brand B for better skin.

Over and over the ads are played.
The programming for your brain is laid.
You are like their little fool,
buy brand A for your shampoo.

TV reflects reality.
I meant the exact opposite of reality.
Where all women have cleavage,
and all men have money.

When times are bad you watch TV,
to admire the wealth of the “average joes”.
When times are good you watch TV,
feeling lucky you are not out of job.

When you need love you watch TV,
admire the romantic sweet stories.
When you are in love you watch TV,
how you hope your guy is like him.

In front of the flat lifeless box,
you laugh, you weeped, you cheered.
You experience all kinds of emotion.
While nothing is actually happening to you.

Day by day you are being programmed.
Your opinions formed and your journeys traveled.
There is nothing else left to do.
Except to be programmed even more.

The further you are from reality,
the more you love TV.

Hong Kong Electricity Tariff down 3% also complain!

From The Standard

Timothy Chui and Bonnie Chen
Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Customers of CLP Power expecting bills to be about 10 percent cheaper are in for a shock - they will see only a 3 percent cut in prices when new tariffs come into effect next month.
CLP is to cut capital expenditure by 30 percent over the next five years under the new scheme of control negotiated with the government, resulting in what was estimated to be a 10 percent saving to consumers.

But the savings have been eaten up by global energy prices, according to Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau Tang-wah. “We are seeing a major upsurge in fuel costs, essentially coal for power generation. Since last July, coal prices have increased by more than 100 percent,” Yau said.

“As a result, CLP needs to recoup this part of the cost, which will bring down the 10 percent reduction by 7 percent. In net terms, CLP consumers will be enjoying a 3 percent reduction from October 1.”

The new scheme of control was approved by the Executive Council yesterday.

CLP’s five-year capital expenditure will be cut from a proposed HK$56.6 billion to HK$39.9 billion, which will be spent on expansion, development, maintenance and upgrades.

Yau said further basic tariff savings beyond 10 percent through the lowering of capital expenditure were not possible, as the company still had commitments to develop infrastructure at Kai Tak and West Kowloon.

CLP signed the new Scheme of Control Agreement in January under which the permitted rate of return was changed to 9.99 percent starting next month from the previous 13.5 percent to 15 percent.

CLP will also increase its fuel clause charge by 5.9 HK cents per kilowatt hour on October 1 to better balance its projected fuel clause account.

Offsetting the reduction in the basic tariff, the average net tariff including the fuel clause charge will be lowered from 91.1 cents per kilowatt hour to 88.4 cents per kilowatt hour.

There was dismay over the plan.

The Democratic Party’s Fred Li Wah-ming said he was disappointed by the low rate and urged CLP to show more transparency in their development plans.

“We were expecting a double-digit cut but it ended up with a single digit only and that is only 3 percent,” he said, adding rising fuel prices did not excuse the limited reduction.

“Our government cannot monitor coal prices. That means if prices keep on increasing then CLP can further hike electricity bills.

“I am worried Hongkong Electric will follow suit as coal power generation takes up 70 percent of its output, which is even more than that of CLP.”

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong’s Chan Kam-lam also expressed disappointment and urged the government to press CLP to provide more details about coal prices, its development plan and the tariff stabilization fund balance.

“Where will this large amount of money go? How can they reduce the tariffs by so little?” Chan asked.

Hongkong Electric is expected to reduce electricity charges when it renews its agreement on January 1.

The company is set to announce the cuts in December after discussions with the government.

CLP managing director Betty Yuen So Siu-mai said the city’s energy tariff remained close to 1998 levels in contrast to the 40 to 60 percent increases experienced by London, New York and Singapore.

She said the company’s fuel clause recovery account is expected to accumulate a deficit of more than HK$1 billion.

“Unless markets see a sustained downward price correction, we may have to adjust the fuel clause charge sometime next year,” she added.

Coalition to Monitor Public Transport and Utilities spokesman Richard Tsoi Yiu-cheong said he had expected reductions of up to 15 percent.

He accused CLP of a lack of sincerity and expressed doubts about the company’s future capital expenditure especially since it has already abandoned the plan to build a terminal on Soko Islands.

Mozilla MineField Much Faster than Google Chrome

It is browser wars all over again as Mozilla’s special project, Minefield, beats Chrome in JS rendering speed according to Ars Technica

One of the most impressive features in Google’s open source Chrome web browser is V8, a high-performance JavaScript virtual machine that was developed by a team of specialists in Denmark. Although Chrome’s performance beats the current stable version of Firefox, benchmarks show that Mozilla’s next-generation JavaScript engine actually outperforms V8.

Mozilla is using tracing optimization techniques and Adobe’s open source nanojit to increase the execution speed of SpiderMonkey, the JavaScript runtime engine in the Firefox web browser. The new engine, which is called TraceMonkey, delivers unprecedented JavaScript performance. The new optimizations have already landed in the latest Firefox nightly builds (but still have to be manually enabled) and will likely be included in Firefox 3.1.

JavaScript creator and Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich ran the SunSpider JavaScript benchmarks against Chrome and the latest TraceMonkey-enabled Firefox build, which includes some recent improvements. The benchmarks show that TraceMonkey is clearly faster than Google’s V8. Mozilla believes that the optimization technique used in TraceMonkey has the potential to unlock even more performance improvements.

Data source: Mozilla
“As we continue to trace unrecorded bytecode and operand combinations, we will only get faster,” Eich wrote in a blog entry. “What spectators have to realize is that this contest is not a playoff where each contending VM is eliminated at any given hype-event point. We believe that Franz & Gal-style tracing has more ‘headroom’ than less aggressively speculative approaches, due to its ability to specialize code, making variables constant and eliminating dead code and conditions at runtime, based on the latent types inherent in almost all JavaScript programs.”

Eich also praises Chrome. He says that the V8 JavaScript engine is “very-well engineered” and he describes the multiprocess design as “righteous”.

The results of the benchmark show that Mozilla is still a powerful force to be reckoned with in the browser space and that they will continue to innovate and remain relevant as new companies enter the market.
