Unhappy with SMU… SMU is inconsiderate even before term starts!

I recently receive a SNAIL MAIL (god, what a waste of paper) from SMU telling me to go for a Briefing on Community Service projects that I will have to undertake in future as a SMU student. The motive for holding such a briefing is good, as it allows dumb heads like me to know what community service is, or what you have to do for a community service.

Now the main issue.

As like many other Singaporeans who have either just finished Army or JC and are waiting to start their term in University in August, I landed myself a job, 5 days per week, normal office hour. Having a job is necessary, unless one’s parents are rich and gives out pocket money like no tomorrow. Me, along with many others in the same situation as me, we are working our ass off to earn money to feed ourselves, trying and learning to be independent at the same time.

Now SMU comes along, ask me to go for this briefing, which they bolded and underlined in the letter is COMPULSORY, and is scheduled on a Tuesday or Wednesday (a working day) and begins at 3.30pm (during office hour).

What are you trying to do, SMU? This is very ignorant of the situation of students who have to work to earn their pocket money. What is more alarming is that SMU is renowned for offering all kinds of financial help to students, (I believe much more than the other 2 Universities), and hence should be more aware of the situation of students with no gold mines at home.

I have blasted them an email, hoping for a prompt reply. Here is an extract.

Hi,

I received the mail regarding community service briefing, and there was a mention of registering for it on the ontrac system. I have logged in to the system but could not find any page/links with regards to the briefing.

Also, would like to know if this briefing is ABSOLUTELY compulsory, as me, and I believe a significant amount of other matriculated students are working while waiting for school to start. Setting this briefing on a weekday and during office hour, would no doubt cause lots of problem for me and many others.

I have work to do and would prefer to report to work rather than go for this briefing unless it is ABSOLUTELY compulsory.

Thank you so much, looking forward to your prompt reply.

They can do these during orientation.

The talk is compulsory. But you need not go for this talk specifically. You can always go for another session in the future as it is held periodically. This is held early so students who are free can begin on clearing their CIP hours before school even starts, as you must attend the talk before commencing.

Chill dude. you take things way too seriously.
