Jakarta - David Hartanto puncture professor pembimbingnya Chan Kap Luk at Nanyang University, Singapore, and then perform the action suicide. Motifnya related issue of alleged breach scholarship. “Miskomunikasi suspected this, because the issues that scholarships terminated. This is be pitied, really be pitied,” said the official protocol Counselors KBRI Singapore Djatmiko time to be contacted via international call, on Monday (2/3/2009). this event, in the environment of the campus according to the Nanyang University campus is the first event that occurred. “They all regrets, this is the last year. April and July tests later pengukuhan graduation, so stay a few more months,” added Djatmiko. According to him, pricking the one person was suspected, because of the scholarship is not the professor he tikam.

“Lecturers-lecturers do not understand why this happened, only that he was actually there in one person. If the professor does not have this problem, he was not determine policy, and not issued a decision that termination of scholarship. Yes words staffs here seems wrong people,” Djatmiko dust. Indeed, this year is a scholarship last year, and David as the upset. “In all, if a scholarship can be terminated while working, no problem. Miskomunikasi Yes suspected this,” close Djatmiko. It would seem that the suspected trigger for stabbing was because when the lecturer mentioned to David that his scholarship will be terminated that year, David thought that Prof Chan wanted to terminate his scholarship due to poor results. However, this is an misunderstanding as David is in his final year and of course his scholarship will end that year.

It would also be interesting to note that David had definitely plan to stab Prof Chan. I don’t think a kitchen knife is something that is lying on Prof Chan’s table so David must have brought it.

According to Straits Times, this is not the first time David misunderstand things.

DAVID Hartanto Widjaja, 21, was a bright student who came to Singapore four years ago on an Asean scholarship.

His performance was slipping and he was struggling with his final-year project, which was due next month.

They called him a ‘genius’ in maths who had previously represented Indonesia in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

A former president of the NTU Electronic Sports Club, he enjoyed computer gaming, they said, but he was a private person who preferred to indulge in this alone in his hostel room. He had a single-room in Hall Four, and was not known to be social.

Associate Professor Michael Heng, who taught him for one class last semester, said he remembered appointing Widjaja as a representative for his tutorial group, but he misunderstood this and thought he had been put in charge of the entire lecture group.

Prof Heng said the student approached him to say that he could not handle such heavy responsibilities. ‘Although it was a misunderstanding, he stated his case clearly. I thought he was confident.’

Is David actually having problem with verbal English?

David was working on Multiview acquisition from Multi-camera configuration for person adaptive 3D Display under Prof Chan, a very tough project where “multi-cameras will be used to obtain multiviews of a scene. Regeneration of 3D display will be adapted to the viewer position.
Strong Mathematical skills and C/C++ programming is needed. Experience in OpenCV is an added advantage.” Details can be found here.

Update: According to a contact working at NUH, Prof Chan took an Xray this afternoon. All seemed to be well.

Updated @ 4PM: Straits Times finally reveal the reason behind stabbing, quoting the same source as me. This blog post was published at 11.30am. Straits Times states that the termination of scholarship is a “misunderstanding” as David can still work part time to stay on. I don’t quite understand this part yet as I can’t see how this is a misunderstanding..

Updated @ 1AM: Straits times has confirmed that David had his scholarship revoked last month. If anything, this revelation made the incident a mystery again. Why would be stab the Prof for a revoked scholarship, since the Prof definitely could not be the one who revoked it. Also, the scholarship was revoked last month, like that not lag meh?

But who gets the most pity from me in this incident? It is him:

omg. it is so sad that he had to die like that. he would be graduated very soon and he could start his career after that. good in studies doesn’t mean good in dealing with problems in life. it is real pitied. all he did in his life is studying and studying. but he is not able to enjoy his hard work yet…

  2. 2 admin

well, he was reportedly playing WC3 an hour before his death. Gaming addiction may be a reason why there was a drop in his academic performance before his death..

  3. 3 sceptic

this is weird. i heard from another person who knew him back in indonesia high school to label david as a cheerful person who’s willing to joke and help people which made the class more lifely. also the type who enjoyed life very much (he used to bring comic books and read it during recess) also known to love computer games since high school. so it’s rather hard for me to believe that his grades went down cause of games and comics if he can still cope with good grades on high school.

i heard that there’s a posibility that the prof attacked him back (cause of the slit marks on david’s neck and lips) and if he didn’t defend himself, the prof. wouldn’t have survived til now. if this is not being told by the prof then maybe there’s smtg even more complicated that’s also not told by the prof?

    maybe because of singlish…

  5. 5 mikes

so… the story of the prof goes like this. they were discussing a normal teacher-student project problem in a normal sunny day. and then he turned his back to the computer and was stabbed from behind. and then he went “??????”

    hmmmm…..

there’s smtg really fish abt the story.

untung dosen guwe kagak kayak di singapure sono … ngeri lah disono … mending belajar di sini aja

I can not accept the statement by some media that he did this because his scholarship is going to be terminated.

    First:
He’s a final year student in final semester.
He should be graduating in the following semester and will it make sense to terminate scholarship for somebody WHO WILL NOT EVEN BE IN SCHOOL BY THEN?

And anyway the limit for scholarship is 3.5 GPA
and he’s a student who can get an A without really studying hard

  8. 8 indonesia student

untung dosen guwe kagak kayak di singapure sono …jauh2 belajar malah stress … dota ae rek

  9. 9 djokos

3.5 avarage GPA is peace of cake man… you dont have to study hard to achieve such a GPA.

  10. 10 updated news

slashed wound’s was found on david’s neck. no wrists wounds whatsoever. ntu dean said no one saw david jumped off the building, the police said david fell from a high building to the glass rooftop and then ground. the media here should really update their news. singapore news are left behind (??) from the indo news. detiknews.com interview with david’s parents and story according to ntu studentEdwin2029 http://comment.straitstimes.com/showthread.php?t=17387&page=13

  11. 11 totok

Djoko…. untuk univ yang ecek2 GPA 3.5 gampang, coba kamu ke NTU! dapat GPA 2 juga belum tentu. nulis bahasa inggris aja salah gitu!

    >Is David actually having problem with verbal English?

More likely than not, the $in-gaporeans were having trouble expressing themselves in English, and their poor communication skills only made things worse.

  13. 13 admin

Please note Prof Chan is not a native singaporean.

Singaporean Chinese = Singaporean who is a chinese.
Chinese Singaporean = Someone from China who become Singaporean.

In the newspapers it was reported Prof Chan was Chinese Singaporean.

  14. 14 Gostev

Well, if I were to stab someone, I’d finish him off..
Why should I just give two weak stabs, and run away commiting suicide?

And afterall, the professor leaves the hospital just in a few days..

Again if I didn’t want to kill, just want to make him suffer for his entire life, I’d have stab his vital organs..

In this case, i vote for justice..

  15. 15 John

“the police did not say that ‘the professor was stabbed’. Where this assumption come from? Why they did not say about it?”

“There was NO WOUND whatsoever on his wrists and police also has confirmed it”

“He also still play Hammerfall game in Facebook at 2 am on the incident day”

a murderer played game in the night before incident? If I was him,
I will seriously think how would I prepare myself tomorrow.

    “according to his parent,
police guessed that it may be happened when the bottom part of his head smashed
the ground. In that case, his chin will have broken and it did not.”

My question is: WHERE DOES THAT SLASH WOUND ON HIS NECK CAME FROM?

  16. 16 oh please

oh please…all u guys are trying to analyse the whole case like sherlock holmes…its not logical that he did this or did that…

for goodness sake…the guy is mentally unsound! nothing he does can be explained with logical thinking!

The story is simple! he went bonkers, snapped…and jumped!

  17. 17 GUEST

i feel something fishy about this..

first, if david was on his final year, he should be doing his last project (or whatever they called it) or at LEAST, giving his lecturer THE NAME of HIS PROJECT.

why there is no one who post or tell about this thing.

second, The wound on David’s neck. why there should be a wound on his neck if he jump??

third, if david really want to kill that professor, why don’t he just slash him on his neck or vital organ?? that prof. go out from hospital in 2 days, that indicated that he wasn’t seriously injured.

it’s really a fishy case, lot’s of unsolved things. i think that there are something really big on this case.

maybe david already did his last project but this project was dangerous for the university or for the professor. well, it’s just my guess.. i just wanted this case being solved rightly and the one who’re wrong should get his punishment

  18. 18 admin

name of project can be found on NTU website. Has something to do with 3d mapping

  19. 19 rudy

Hahaha… dan kena cubit molo? :D Tapi jadinya berdua kurang creative kayak biasanya.

  20. 20 No_need_name

lets see it psychologically, if someone was to jump out of a 7th-storey building, what is the probability of that person to have the courage to do it? most unlikely. The person might have several reasons that encouraged him to do that. Example: sadness, anger. What do you think david feels when he was told that his scholarship was to be terminated? jump out of the window? wouldn’t he have done that earlier in similar cases? such as low grades for exams, and insulted by classmates? well according to the evidence there is no such thing. I believe that David was murdered by the proffesor and david is defending himself. Or a person murdered david first and stabbed the proffesor, and the proffesor did not see who stabbed him. I think another person did it, envy? because according to the details David is a genius?
