Religion is invented by the inability to accept death

Death to me is the discontinuation if consciousness. Just like when you are in a dreamless sleep, there is zero awareness of self and of the surrounding. It is tremendously difficult, given our limited abilities of comprehension to understand what death would feel like, given that upon death, one would not even be concious.

I think that most religion came about much the same way as myths and legends; from our need to find an explaination which we cannot understand.

Many religion contains account of life after death, such as existence of spirits, ghosts, heaven and hell.

All these make up the bulk of most religion, and are “entities” that cannot be scientifically proven to be true. They provide convenient explainations to death which we are otherwise unable to comprehend.

The void of death. Not being aware if your own lack of existence. Not being able to come to terms with one’s termination of awareness. The real implication of death is difficult to understand let alone put into words.

Humans think too highly of themselves and they think that unlike animals, there must be something in store for them at death. One simply cannot tolerate one’s own inexistence upon death and hence the concept of spirits and ghosts is born. With this concept and belief, “death” is no longer “death”. There is no cessation of existence or consciousness, only transformation from one form of existence to the next.

There exist many different types of people in the world, and with the rule of average, some would no doubt be considered as “bad” while others, “good”. Self righteous people cannot tolerate bad individuals who commit evil and wrong-doings all their life while not getting any retribution. There must be some form of punishment for these people for the fear that many others will follow their ways without fear. With the inadequate justice system in the early days of our early days, justice must be dealt out somehow and someway.

With what follows death being a complete unknown, “life after death” became a convenient spot for punishments and rewards to be inserted. The promise of a “heaven” or “paradise” where one can live in eternal happiness and freedom, and the fear of entering hell where one would be awarded with eternal anguish and sufferings as punishments for all the crimes that was carried out, was invented to strip human beings from their animal instincts and civilise them.

However, without doubt, questions have to be raise. Heaven and hell, a gathering of spirits of all the deads, like all other destinations and places in the real world, would have a finite capacity. After thousands of years human existence and uncountable number of deaths, wouldn’t Heaven and Hell be a little too overcrowded by now? Also, Heaven and Hell, being the carrot and stick that guides human behavior, contains irony in itself. If one behaves good for the sake of going to Heaven, does that person deserves going to one?

These are all just my little thought, no offence intended to anyone, religion, or organisation.
