@WK: I had a pretty good tutor when I was in JC1… 8 long years ago.. He promptly left when I moved to JC2, and I had a horrible one.. All she cared about was going to meet her boyfriend after school.
I agree with Wei Kiat. The standard is quite consistent, if not worse. A decade ago, the entire English department was a total disgrace. There are students who could actually write, speak and teach better than the tutors. And there were students so weak in GP, they literally write essays in completely broken English but receive a ‘pass’ grade from the tutors on account of ‘content’ being there.
To quote some something recalled from memory when I read some of the horrible essays:
“The computer industry booming, so websites number increase. Therefore companies make money a lot.”
Basic idea: Write a proper sentence, take out all possible connectors and jumble up some words in a Singlish manner. That’s the quality you get. I think a secondary school student could write better than those JC students and tutors there.
A decade later, I still think they’re a piece of crap. And I have no qualms criticizing my alma mater to the core. A school with no innovative learning and direct memorization of 10 year series to keep up with its (then) 6th ranking among the (then) 14 JCs in Singapore. It was a total mistake even putting the JC as one of my choices, and it’s the only thing more shameful than criticizing it, should some people point out that fact.
i know of one gp tutor in ajc who cant speak really well
Well at least now its really not so bad. In fact I have no idea how lousy AJ’s GP used to be until I got to this website. The english dept now is respectable. I’m one of those who can testify this. Close to 50% got As and Bs in the year I graduate and GP is not something that can be memorised. Hopefully people will not leave this website thinking the worse of AJ when really, we are not.

its not damage to ajc? It is considerate advises given to future batches of secondary school grads to not go ajc and waste their grade. ajc has wonderful negative value-add when it comes to alevel score.

i’m not living in a cave. it is those who are not that open-minded who are.
whether or not it is comparable to other JCs, it is ultimately you who counts. if the school trys its best and you do not bother to absorb because you are overly obessessed with criticizing it then it’s definitely gonna be the case that you will not do well for your As!
common sense is that every school wants to produce students of top quality, ppl who end up leading the world as the top tiers but not everyone is the same, maybe the mthd of teaching in AJ didn’t suit u that’s y you complain so much. but dun make a sweeping statement that AJ is bad because though in some areas it is really requiring improvements, it is overall better than average and isn’t it alr trying to improve for batches like us the present ones? the track is changed the council is willing to offer more services for us and etc etc etc shldn’t u as an alumini know too? as such you shld nvr criticise our sch like that because such an attitude is not smthing that AJ teaches us and at the very least the future batches such as myself dun want such an image generalised onto us because we don’t feel in any way that our sch is bad and i have never learnt such attitudes from my sch. thx~

I do not have to go into long essays to explain to you how the educational system in Singapore ACTUALLY work.
I think you can just satisfy yourself with your level of understanding, no one would say it is wrong, except those who know better.
Just an example, do u noe that twice yearly maintenance of school (e.g replacing track, painting walls, etc is an MOE requirement?)

I kind of doubt the authenticity of the ‘model essay’. I do not think that the standard of any school is that bad that an essay like this can score the top grade.
However the essay is a decent piece if one considers the emphasis of college. It could be that the tutors in AJ do not value the arguments presented and ideas developed in the essay as much as a student’s ability to present a coherent, clear and structured piece. In that respect, the essay is well-presented. Nonetheless the essay does warrant such a high grade and more so given the errors highlighted by admin. On a side note, it would be worrying that an essay like this deserves the highest mark - The standard of the cohort must have been much worse.
I do not know if this method of grading is inferior to the alternatives but it appears reasonable to me. Speaking from experience, the GP Department in AJ may not be the most experienced lot but they sure are a dedicated bunch of people. Well.. I am still not confident in ability of the college at assisting the students to achieve that distinction for the As though.
Oh and for the few responses above uhm.. Please do not engage in such poor arguments in the eyes of the public while at the same time publicising yourselves as students of AJC. It kind of… doesn’t reflect well upon the rest of the other students. (Perhaps one of the writers above can consider writing in proper sentences and spelling and the other can consider giving more mature and insightful arguments)

In RJC, this is just one of those moderate looking essays that could be scoring around 22-27, sure doesn’t seem like a 37 mark paper to me. Amelioration? I don’t think so. I could have a good one send out for you on speedpost if you ever require it for future purposes?
