I was at the World Food Fair 2008 with Si Hui and enjoying out Fish Maw soup from Teochew City Restaurant when we noticed this stall selling chicken rice. While all the other stalls have a crowd in front of them, this stall strangely has none. And for the entire length of time that took us to transfer the delicious soup to our stomach, no a single person show interest in that stall. Me and Si Hui also passed some remarks about the stall not having any pricing displayed and the 4 chicken hanging there looked as if they have been around since stone age. Our impression of that stall was certainly negative.
When we were about the embark on our ice-cream, a man in his 50s approached us and ask if the seat next to me was available. I said yes and he said while pointing to the chicken rice stall, “Thank you thank you. I going buy the chicken rice from that stall, its the best!” Me and Si Hui exchanged surprised look and when the man came back with his plate of chicken rice… oh wow! The rice smells good, and the chicken looks delicious. Tempted and curious, I decided to get a plate.
While I was queuing, some people noticed and when I got my plate, a huge crowd had formed behind me, murmuring among themselves. The crowd soon transfer into queue, and the stall then enjoys a constant stream of customer. The Singapore Mass Effect has began.
So you see, Singaporeans (myself guilty) evaluate stuff not based on its quality, but on the amount of interest that OTHER PEOPLE has. So tips for anyone setting up new shops or stalls, get all your friends and relatives to act as crowd. You will be making big bucks in no time.
