My laptop went dead after giving me drastic hints that it was already on its last few breaths (or boot-ups) for 2 weeks. When it finally went to the place in the clouds where laptops live happily ever after, I discover that it was not my entire laptop that went dead. My laptop simply had difficulty detecting its own organ. It had no idea it has a hard drive.
So I tore open my laptop to take a look at its interior, and discovered that one of its nerve connection to the hard drive was loose. I tightened it and pesto! My laptop had returned from paradise to the real world.
That was a week ago. My laptop’s spirit managed to slipped away from me while I was in Tekong. When I return yesterday, all traces of its spirit had already disappeared. No amount of operation could bring it back to life. It simply to refuse to acknowledge the presence of a hard drive in its small fragile body. There are 2 possible cause of this.
1) Hard drive is spoilt.
2) Connection problem.
I have absolutely no idea which is the cause.
There are two possible solutions.
1) Buy a new hard drive from Sim Lim Square and replace the one in my laptop myself.
2) Send my laptop to Acer for repair.
Solution 1 is cheaper, and if successful, I can start using my computer right away (after installing XP…) I will also get 5 years of hard drive warranty directly from the hard drive manufacturer. However, if the problem doesn’t lie in the hard drive, I’ll have to send my laptop to acer in the end. And this cost more money.
Solution 2 is more expensive, but the problem will definitely be fixed. However, I have no idea how long Acer will take to fix my laptop. Also, if the hard drive fails again, I will be without a manufacturer warranty, and I will have to blog this very same blog entry again.
Ok, I have decided to take the risk and try solution one. If I fail I can console myself in knowing that I’ll be a proud owner of a new 80GB portable hard drive.
