The Field Camp Experience (Write - up)

The 6 days field camp is a rewarding experience for me. Once again, NS had taught me not to take things around me for granted, and it is a fantastic feeling to be able to appreciate what I am missing once I come back from the field camp. I will never look at basic stuff like lights, running water, and freshly cooked food the same way again.

Other than depriving us of basic things like light, running water and fresh food, we were also given the experience of being cut off from the rest of world for 6 days. Our handphones were not brought out to the field camp, and we could not communicate with the outside world at all. There is absolutely no way to communicate with my loved ones. As a result, I missed them and treasure the time I had with them even more.

One interesting aspect of the Field Camp was powder bathing. I used to shower 1 or 2 times per day when I was at home, but during the field camp, instead of using water, we had to use the SAF body and foot powder. Although it doesn’t work as well as using real water, the amazing powder did indeed make me feel fresh and clean. The person who invented the powder must be a genius. Unfortunately, I still suffered from heat rash as a result of lack of shower, which I painfully bear with for the rest of the field camp.

I was also fortunately enough to learn that my buddy snores extremely loudly. It was interesting to see him rudely awaken by his own snore multiple times. My friends in bashas near ours thought that a wild boar had came in the middle of the night. Of course, fun aside, I had difficulty sleeping throughout the entire field camp because of his snore.

All in all, although the field camp is something that I would certainly not want to try again, it is an enriching and highly inspiring experience as it had taught me many stuff, and I had also learnt to kope with lower morale and high stress level when carrying out activities.

(What am I writing? Can’t be bothered. This had to be submitted today.)

Tune

I have no idea what the hell I was talking about in the past few entries. I was just trying to tune my english writing ability back.

You know when you go for concerts, before the actual performance starts, the band will tune their instruments and produce tonnes of gibberish notes unfit for audience consumption. The recent entries are for that purpose.

I will let you know once I finish tuning, perhaps in about 1 year and 10.5 month’s time.

Meritocracy

Many Singaporeans are firm believers of Meritocracy. So much that they are blinded by the word and often use it as convenient benchmark to judge the ability of people, and to illusion themselves into thinking that the society we live in is a fair one. Anyone beyond primary school education with average intelligent should know that there is no such thing as fairness, equality in this world, and indirectly, meritocracy do not exist.

For a simple example, take a look at education. Meritocracy rewards those who are capable. The former sentence sounds good, except for the loosely defined word, “capable”. In every context, “capable” can mean different thing. Our students live in a narrowly defined playground created by those who are academically strong and those who are not. Academically strong people defined success and achievements as being able to soak up as much knowledge as possible. Others in the system have to follow their footsteps and achieve similar success in order to be successful. Of course everyone is given an “equal” chance to succeed, but the type of success is limited by those who had already achieved it and continue to hug on to the fact that their own success are the only success that can be considered “success” for those behind them.

In our context meritocracy, despite being a noble sounding concept, limits the achievement of an individual. In a country where there is much emphasis on education, success is given to those who can memorize more information. In a country where there is more emphasis on military prowess, success is given to those who who are more physically fit. Although everyone is given the same chance to have a go at achieving success, Meritocracy in this sense isn’t really fair as “success” is defined by situation or society, and not by the individual.

Warmth Shower

Grabbing a shower at Tekong is a very cold affair. Angry, unpleasant, cold and nasty jet of undrinkable water arrows towards your body with extreme aggression, determined to grab some heat of you to power their fury and leave you shivering in its wake. Shower at Tekong is cold.

Having a shower at home is a totally different experience. Upon flipping of the magical switch, warm water flows out. Water that runs through your body gently and slowly, taking their time, caressing you, cleansing you, massaging you and making you feel refresh before slowly making their way down into the drain, the sewage, the treatment plant, and back to your showering point again. Showering at home is warm.

Likewise, despite having temperate that is 1 degree higher than mainland, Tekong feels cold. And my home on the cooler mainland feels warm.

At home, my parents shower me with warmth, care and love in every way possible. Their small small actions to show that they really care for me and want me to rest well and enjoy my little burst of freedom on weekends make every cells on my body jump for joy, and every nerves on my body weep with thanks. At Tekong, friendship and care is winter cold compared to the desert that radiated from the heart of my loved ones.

I want to be showered with warmth, at where the warm shower is.

Steamboat or Steam-man?

I alighted at Marina Bay with my girlfriend, and we route marched all the way Zhen Fa BBQ Steamboat to enjoy our long awaited steamboat dinner. We went there with high spirit, and paid $24 fucking dollars to dampen our spirit. I had lost my English writing ability after this two weeks, so I will just write down my thoughts as they come in point forms.

1) Poor fire control method. Occasionally, some diners’ steamboat will catch fire and the employees put out fire by stepping or slapping with cardboard boxes.
2) Table catch fire easily, burning the plastic sheet on the table, releasing poisonous toxic flumes to playground in everyone’s lungs.
3) No additional utensils were given for consumers to handle cooked and uncooked food separately.
4) Chopsticks given were made of plastic, and the tip of the chopsticks looked rounded and melted. Melted chopsticks had become lining for consumer’s stomachs. What comforting thought.
5) All the meat for BBQ contain very high amount of MSG and taste very salty. This is to encourage consumers to purchase drinks sold separately at black market prices.
6) There are many LP Gas Containers stacked around pillars where consumers are eating. A potential health hazard if they are to fall onto people, or if they are still unused, a potential fire hazard.
7) Lots of insects flying around, kamikaze-ing on my steamboat and food.
8) Big spat of oil shoot into my girlfriend’s eye.

Conclusion: If you want cheap BBQ steamboat experience, and don’t mind gently coating your lungs and stomach with a bit of plastic here and there, go for Zhen Fa BBQ Steamboat. $12 for adult and $5 for children!

Weikiat is at field camp this week, until thursday afternoon, I think. Hence there is nothing for me to post since weikiat cannot sms me anything, and I don’t know what he is going through. Wait 3 more days. He will be back.

Therefore, the next blog post should be up any time this weekend or next Monday or Tuesday. Stay tuned! :)

Wei Kiat got accepted!!!

Weikiat got a letter from SMU last thursday. He was accepted by SMU School of Information Systems for the Information System Management course. That’s very very good news. Good news arrive for him 2 days before his field camp.

He was so happy after he called his mum that night, and she told him about the letter. Wah! I think the school saw his newspaper article and accepted him immediately. Haha… Never mind if you did badly for the interview. Just appear on newspaper. Haha…

All his bunkmates demanded a treat after weikiat told them this news. I guess he will be too happy to sleep that night ba… I also want a treat! :)

Today is his 2nd day at field camp, and I am not sure how he is now. No smses, no phone-talk for so many days. Quite a sad thing :( But this is the worst part of BMT so I guess his days on Tekong will be better after this 6 grueling days. I hope. And hope. And hope more.

Just bring Weikiat back safely in one piece, with no major injury and illness. And I shall be seeing him on Friday (that is, if they let him book out on Friday).

Wei Kiat Wei Kiat

Ok, the title is ridiculous. But I couldn’t think of the title for this post, hence I feel that putting weikiat’s name as the title would be a bit apt. Haha…

Weikiat had out field training this morning, and he just returned for lunch. After his lunch, he will be going back to the fields. Where his back will turn brown (mud-colour) and his face, green (camouflage cream, i think).

He finds that scary, but what is scarier awaits him: 6-days field camp. So poor thing…

But thankfully, his field camp starts on Saturday, hence he only need stay in for 2 weeks. If his field camp was earlier, like Tuesday, he will need to stay in for 3 weeks. How to survive…

Take care, my boy :) I shall wait for your return :) And enjoy the 4 days’ holiday you are entitled to after that disgusting field camp.

Another book in

Once again, another book in. This time I will be in for 12 days, a rather long duration. This is because of the upcoming Field Camp, dubbed by most as the main highlight of the BMT experience. For Field Camp we will all be inside the forest as one with nature for 6 days. Eek.

I notice that I had been neglecting my blog lately, but during book outs I engulf myself with happiness and fun, and am too lazy to blog. I’ll write more when I am in camp on my little notebook that I bring around me, and transfer the content here during my next book out, on the 28th.

Good bye Information Technology, My Girlfriend and very supportive Family. Through NS I have learnt how those around me shower me with love, and how I should never ever take their care and concern for granted. I wanted very badly to say “I love you” and “Thank you” to my parents, but I still feel too shy and embarrassed to say such a thing.

Sorry for throwing my temper when we didn’t get to eat steamboat yesterday. Me and my girlfriend originally planned to go to Marina Bay for steamboat for yesterday’s dinner. When my parents know about it they wanted to go for steamboat with me as well, but my dad was reluctant so we went to turf city and discovered that the steamboat there had already closed. Then we went to Sunset Way where we had steamboat previously, and discovered that it was closed as well. So I became angry and accused my parents of ruining my steamboat dinner. My dad even offered to bring us to sakura in place of it. But I say rejected firmly because it is very expensive, and I had already went there twice last month, We went to a coffee shop and had Chinese cuisine instead. I can feel that my parents are trying to please me by ordering many nice dishes. Afterwards, I felt very guilty. Stupid me for throwing my temper when my parents are so nice to me. They even help me wash my NS clothes and fold them neatly every book out. What had they done to deserve an angry son? I am now very determined to treat my parents nicer, listen to them, and don’t make them angry or become angry with them.

I am such a stupid son, and a stupid boyfriend. I must learn to treat those who love me with equal care and concern. Care and concern exhibited by loved ones is unparalleled and can never be found on Tekong.

I can’t wait for the next book out to be showered by care and concern from my loved one again, and I’ve promised myself to treat better next book out.

1.5 hours to book in. See you on 28th April.
