NS 1st day.

Weikiat sent me an sms:

Siao liao sibei siong.
Fuck

Ok, it seems that his officer is some noob, and he thinks that being hard on the recruits is the right way to shine. And that noob even got scolded by people of higher rank for being too fierce. LOL.

Hope Weikiat is alright…

Last post before green pastures

In a few hours I will be leaving for Tekong. “Time to serve the country”, some may say. But to me it is about two years of putting the more active parts of my brain into deep hibernation, perhaps to conserve my sanity, as they are no longer needed when you are part of the Singapore Armed Forces.

Today is the last day I touch my computer, play my PSP, go out with my girlfriend and see my family for 2 weeks. It is indeed depressing. So depressing that crying seems like a good option, although crying is an activity that males do not have the luxury of indulging in.

The entire Weikiat.NET will be managed by my wonderful gf while I am away. So please be gentle with the site. Also, any rude or faming remarks will be deleted, as I won’t be around to entertain them.

Good bye all. May all be well and happy.

ST Forum Discussion 12/03/2007

You need brains or lots of dough to pursue higher education

REFER to the two forum letters, ‘Is the aim of education a set of perfect scores?” and ‘Poly route shut for average students’, (ST, March 8).

The first writer appears a little too harsh on A-level students in Raffles Junior College.

In the second article, the writer underscores a very significant fact of Singapore’s competitive world of educational achievements. Average students are having difficulty getting into poly because applicants nowadays are having better entry results.

For RJC students who ‘weep” on getting their results, may I say that this reflects the ‘Rafflesian Spirit” of aiming passionately for excellence and perfection. It shows the ’seriousness” such RJC students attach to their achievements, whether in studies, sports, contests, et cetera.

‘Weeping” is an emotional release not of weakness, but of overwhelming feelings and passion.

Having studied in RI, I am proud of the ‘Rafflesian Spirit” in helping to inculcate excellence and a broader mind.

When students are still young, chasing for ‘paper qualifications” is perfectly normal. There is plenty of time after finishing studies for non-academic achievements.

Each JC student understands his/her own priorities and limitations better than most of us.

Short of getting the best examination results, chances of further studies can be very limited without parental financial support.

Singapore is not a wonderland if you do not have brains (reflected in examination results) or money to pursue higher education.

Lim Boon Tong

My take:
Within the 2 bolded segments of this letter, I highlighted his contradictions liao. “For RJC students who ‘weep” on getting their results, may I say that this reflects the ‘Rafflesian Spirit” of aiming passionately for excellence and perfection.” and “I am proud of the ‘Rafflesian Spirit” in helping to inculcate… a broader mind.” Is he trying to say that “Rafflesian Spirit” refers to narrow minded people who are extremely obsessed with academic excellence, or is he trying to say that “Rafflesian Spirit” is about having a broader mind?

“Singapore is not a wonderland if you do not have brains (reflected in examination results) or money to pursue higher education.”
While it is true that the society as a whole judges brain from examination result, in actual fact both does not share a direct co-relation.

While some of his other points are quite valid and insightful, they appeared to be edited by an editor at SPH, especially statements towards the end.

Lim Boon Tong should be friend with Wee Shu Min.

An Adult Story

She sighed as she opened again, letting another guy in. She was rocked gently, but years of working in this occupation had made her numb to this. Feeling a bit hungry being in the same space for hours on end, she took out a half chewed apple from a clear plastic bag to grab a bite.

Day in day out, she had to entertain tonnes of customers. This is especially true on weekend and public holidays, where the number of customers she opened for actually more than tripled that of weekdays. Despite her long working hours with little rest, she don’t earn alot. All her customers pay her quite a large sum of money, but her boss took them all and only paid her daily wages, which as the wife of somebody of outstanding status would label as “less than peanuts”.

Her occupation is not one that everybody would take, but she took it because she needs money to survive, and she was unable to find employment in other more ordinary jobs.

She returned the apple back to its plastic bag, and closed, for the the rocking had stopped.

Stepping on the peddle, she drove out of the bus stop.

My Fake Windows Vista

Windows Vista is too new and unstable for me to use it yet. But my old mac-ish interface I see until sian, so I made some changes to make it look more like vista!

I am too lazy to write a detailed guide on how to make it look like this, but you can just google for it. There are many many ways to do so.

An array of thought

Below are some random thoughts that I had over the past few days that I couldn’t find time out of my busy gaming and anime-ing schedule to blog about.

Girls are more untidy than guys
While with my girlfriend in an apparels shop (Everything $8) today, I witness a lady in her thirties with a very curious looking facial expression, which is a combination of unhappiness, anger, depression, and kiasu-ism. I am not interested in her face. I was interested in what her hands were doing. They were busy picking up clothes, turning them inside out, analyzing it from all three dimensions, and then if the piece wasn’t to her liking, she would chuck it violently and with a non-chalent attitude to her right, like a person driving through a busy road at high speed, while at the same time not bothering to take notice of the traffic. I know that is a poor analogy. Lets forget about it. Anyway, the end result is that in my mind’s eye she is an efficient mess-up-everything android. I contrast this with a guy buying gadgets in an electric store. Does he chuck aside violently what he don’t like in the store? Hell no! He replace it back onto the shelve nicely.

Thus I conclude that females are messier creatures than males.

A kopitiam encounter

My Perspective:
I was a food court in Suntec City with my girlfriend the other day. We were enjoying our food in our little cosy private space - the seat and our table, when a lightning fast arm intruded. It belonged to one of the english speaking lady from the table next to us. Her arm that could easily move faster than the speed of light dumped 2 used trays on my table, and she resumed talking with her similarly aged friends in similar english tongues. I took the 2 trays and placed them gently back at her table, and gave her a good, long stare, and resume eating.

The lady’s perspective:
The other day I was eating at Suntec City with my church friends. We were famished and we quickly bought our food and settle down. There was insufficient space for the trays on my table, so I looked around and spotted this young couple next to us. So I placed the trays on their table, thinking that youth nowadays are very polite and nice gentleman who will let a nice lady like me leave my tray on their table. That couple disappointed me. He returned the trays to my table without a word! How rude! He even stared at me! There is no hope for Singapore if teenagers like this are to be our future leaders! Does his parents teach him manners? What is his school? I want to complain, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, and see to it that he gets public CANING!

Buying Silver
Perllini Silver was having store wide discount of up to 70%, so me and my gf went in and take a look. I look at those silver accessories, and thought, “these things look like stainless steel to me”. Maybe next time I will set up a shop selling “Artificial Silver”, once my sofa business earns me enough capital.

Till the next time!

Entry-Level 2.1 Desktop Speaker System Comparsion

I bought a new speaker today, with money loaned from my parents. It is from a little known Singapore brand, Divoom. The model I bought is Divoom Titan 767 ($69). Lets do a comparison between it and my 3 year old Creative SBS 370 ($39) which is no longer in production, although the current Creative SBS 390 should sound similar to 370.

Design
I have to be honest here. Although my creative one feels more solidly built, the Divoom one won hands down in terms of design. With its slick black colour and open drivers, you can see the powerful drivers vibrating like mad.

Sound stage
How wide the sound stage is refers to how “wide” the range of sound that can be produced by the speaker is. Divoom won again here. It has very nice sounding highs, although its bass is not as powerful as that of Creative SBS 370. Mids in Divoom sounds “hollow” at time, perhaps due to a low end speaker trying to emulate a wider sound stage. Because Creative SBS 370 has a narrower sound stage, it sounds more “compact”.

Clarity
In this segment, Divoom won again. Due to its nicer sounding and more defined highs, it gives me the impression that it has much higher clarity than Creative SBS 370.

Bass
Although Divoom 767 has a subwoofer at 25Watt RMS, its bass sounds weaker and softer than Creative 370, which has a more punchy and a bass that is ever present (This can be annoying to some listeners.) Creative SBS 370 wons here.

Wired Remote Control

Both comes with a wired remote control for volume adjustment without the need to reach the back of the sub woofer. However, Divoom Titan 767’s wired remote control comes with an audio in and headphone out jack, allowing you to easily plug an audio player into the speaker, and also a headphone with no hassle. You can’t do that with Creative SBS 370. The volume adjustment knob on Titan 767 is also large and round, which is very fun and easy to use.

Features
The Creative SBS 370 only has adjustable bass level, while the Titan 767 has adjustable treble and bass.

Pricing
At only SGD39, Creative SBS 370 is certainly more value for money than Titan 767 (SGD69) by a lesser known brand, Divoom.

Final Verdict
If you are low on cash, and loves bass more than anything else, the Creative SBS 370 (or SBS 390 being sold now) is the way to go. However, if you prefer a more rounded sound and better design, Divoom Titan 767 is certainly your cup of tea. However, if you happen to own both, like me, connect them together in parallel with a speaker and enjoy both of them together. SHIOK!
