I was reading the newspaper the other day, where a bunch of rather illogical believers rushed in to the temple to be the first to sink in the joss stick, so that whatever wish they have will come true.
Ever present were the typical Singaporeans’ “Get Rich” dreams by peasants who worked hard and bitter to contribute to our president’s outrageously high but constantly increasing salary (A simple calculation is such that if our president sat in the toilet to shit for 15minutes, he already earn approx $75 while doing his “business”. This is already equal to the daily pay of majority of Singaporeans, for working up to 12 hours in one day.
There are also a bunch of fools which tickled me. They wish for good academic result, which to Singaporeans is indirectly wishing for better wealth when they join the workforce. Then they proudly declared to the newspaper that, “YEAH! No need to study any more!” It is without surprise that we never hear from this people any more.
You see, most people who are desperate enough to camp outside the temple, join the rush to plant the first joss stick when the clock struck 12, are those who are very far from achieving what they wished for (wealth and results). You don’t see an elite like Wee Shu Min praying for good results, or our president praying for wealth.
Consequently those who wishes for wealth and results by planting the first joss stick in the new year are the ones who have the lowest chance of getting it. Because of their believes that god will fulfill their wish to be lazy while making gain (look at how hard people have to work, even under guidance from god, in order to achieve success in legends and myths), they will unconsciously stop working toward their goals, and instead, become as lazy as a stone.
Of course, I am not fully against this plant the first joss stick thing. It certainly adds excitement for many Singaporeans in this otherwise dull and boring place. That alone far outweighs the sufferings experienced by lazy Singaporeans later on.
